How are numbers formatted?

Number formatting is set in two places: decimal places and the thousands separator on the property, and the number format in your user profile.

Two settings decide how a number is written in ITONICS:

  1. The property configuration, which decides how many decimal places are shown and whether a thousands separator is used.
  2. Your user profile, which decides the characters used as the thousands and decimal separator.

Set on the property

Number, Currency and Percentage properties each carry their own formatting settings. They apply to that property everywhere it is shown:

  • Decimal places: how many digits are shown after the decimal separator. The default is 0.
  • Show thousands separator: whether values are grouped in thousands. Switch it off for values that should not be grouped, such as years.
  • Unit label on a Number property, or the selected currency on a Currency property, displayed after the value.

Set in your user profile

The Number format setting in your user profile decides which characters are used as the thousands and the decimal separator. Because it is a personal setting, the same stored value is shown to each person in the notation they expect: one colleague sees 1,500.50 where another sees 1.500,50.

The chosen formatting is correctly reflected across table views, the detail page and stack view, sites, workflows, and export via Excel and API.

Numbers in edit mode

While you are editing a number, the thousands separator is not shown. Only the decimal separator is displayed, following your profile's number format.

Note: Formatting is configured per property. Number, Currency and Percentage properties each have their own decimal places and thousands separator setting, so values that should not be grouped, such as years, can be shown without a separator.

Formula properties. A formula whose result is a number is formatted by the same rules as any other number field. On the Formatting tab you can give it a unit; a minimum, a maximum and a decimal precision are not offered, because the value is calculated rather than entered.
